More on the yo yo's...

I did work on yo yo's while on vacation...in fact, I was wishing I had cut out and brought more fabric circles because they sew up quick and easy.

Here's a look at what I got done. I made two different sizes by starting with circles of fabric 4 inches in diameter and 5 1/2 inches. As Heather mentions in her tutorial, a longer stitch creates a smaller opening; a shorter stitch ~ a larger opening. I used a longer stitch and had a yo yo made in no time. I love being able to use up scraps of fabric!

Now I'm looking for creative ways to use these. I spent a little time searching for ideas, and here are some things I came up with:

~ Yo Yo Angels

~ Yo Yo placemat

~ Yo Yo ornament

~ Yo Yo tree ornament

If you try these, I would love to see what you make!!! Have fun.

I'm in the "cutting out" process just now and hope to be stitching yo-yo's soon. What I'd really like is a yo-yo quilt (are they actually called quilts?). Maybe coverlet is the right word.

  4. I never thought of that! About the stitches I mean. It makes sense. I'm glad you told me. I didn't read Heather's tutorial 'cause I just assumed I knew how to make a yoyo having done it before. But now I remember wishing that my opening was smaller. I know what to do next time. Thanks Debbie!
Yours look so pretty all together like this. Nice combinations of fabrics. I like them made into pillow coverings and the traditional quilts/coverlets best.

  5. They are gorgeous! I like them as a placemat!

I've just finished a tour through your beautiful country home btw, have you felt that someone was there?;-)
Well I visited it through your photos at your flickr site of course and I loved it! You have so many gorgeous old/antique furnitures etc. and I like the way you decorate with floral fabrics!

  7. What is it about yo-yo's that just makes one have to smile? I made them for the first time a few months ago. I used it on a brooch/corsage thingy. Now I definitely want to make more after seeing yours.

I can't remember if I commented on the pouches (I've been having problems with windows) so I'll say it here, I love them both! She was a very deserving winner, too. :)

Saving your yo yo ideas (and the link to the tutorial) for after Christmas. Not only will I have a lot of projects between now and then to keep me busy, but I'm also generating a LOT of fabric scraps that will be perfect for a yo yo project in January!

  9. I made a garland out of some small yo-yo's and wrapped it around a table-size Christmas tree.

I've also been making them into pins using the good parts of damaged old linens. Adding an odd old button here and there really picks up the color, too.

I'm hooked. I never could master a 'real' yo-yo, so these projects restore my faith in myself.
