finishing up in the kitchen

There was one last kitchen project remaining from the remodel started last year, and that was to replace the formica countertop on the island with a concrete counter. After reading up on the technique, planning, and building the form, Mike poured it himself right after New Year's...in the dining room. Here it is after being removed from the form and having been polished...
It was poured in the dining room, as I think it weighed about 500 lbs and would only need to be moved a short way to put it in place.
Here it is strapped to its special moving table on wheels...
...and dropped into place...
It's had several coats of sealer, mineral oil, and wax.
It turned out great I think ~ it has a mottled aged look that I was hoping for.
And some new brackets Mike built for support...
We're both really happy it's finally finished!

  16. I'm really interested that you poured the concrete worktop yourselves - I fancy one but it will come in too expensive. I hadn't really considered doing it ourselves.
Was is straightforward and could you point me towards instructions?

Wow, I just love your kitchen Deb! How I long for a baking center like yours. Not too long ago I wrote about our frugal kitchen remodel (which, sadly, is still not totally finished). We painted our cabinets white too, and we love how they brighten the kitchen. I really admire your creativity, ingenuity and work ethic--I just wrote a post today about how my favorite thrifty tip is to do it yourself!
    Beautiful work!

  20. I second the request for a pointer in the right direction for the how to that your hubby used.

Although if we were to do it, it would probably have little handprints in it if we poured in the kitchen! :-)

  26. I have seen cement counter tops in magazines, and think I would love them. How is it holding up to every day wear and tear, stains and such?
PS I blogged about finishing the "altered" book idea i got from you a couple of months ago. I am really happy with it!

  35. This is a very topical post for me because we have to replace our countertops and concrete was at the top of my list. However, I have a lot of counter to replace and a beam to go around so it would have to be poured in situ. Still considering, I have to show this to my husband.
    Well done.

  36. WOW!! I am dutifully impressed!!! I love that counter top...and the fact that you and hubbin did this together...is all the more special! I bet you are glad to have that out of your dining room and up on the counter, though! I'm sure that took some muscle.

Concrete IS one of the finishes we are contemplating for our island counter top in the new house...of course we haven't EVEN completed the architectural renderings as of yet...but I will be curious to see what you have to say about yours and how it is working out....by the WAY...does your hubbin "rent" out??? Just wondering! LOL...

    Blessings...
