some simple pleasures...

Simple pleasure #1
~oatmeal scones~
they seem the perfect thing to enjoy with tea now, after all the sweets over the holidays.

Oatmeal Scones
1 1/2 c. flour

1 c. rolled oats

1/2 c. packed brown sugar

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

5 tbs butter

1/2 c. golden raisins {or sometimes I use craisins or dried cherries}

2/3 c. buttermilk

1 large egg

Combine flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, & salt. Cut in butter {I use my food processor} until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Fold in raisins. Beat together buttermilk & egg, and stir into flour mixture til just blended. Press dough into a buttered 8-inch round pan. With knife, score top into 8 wedges. Bake 18 - 20 minutes in a 400 degree F. oven. Cool in pan on rack for 10 - 15 minutes. Serve warm.

~an old copy of Pride and Prejudice bought for $1...I love the green color of the cover and the old-fashioned illustrations by Charles E. Brock

Simple pleasure #3

~sitting in my favorite sunny spot with a good book and some tea, glad to be in out of the frigid weather we've been having...

Did you take time out today for some simple pleasures?

  2. I'm going to try those scones! I love the ones at my local coffee shop, cranberry and orange. I recently bought a package mix from a mill but they weren't all that good.
    Yours look great!

  3. Ah, finally I run onto a recipe which sounds good and makes me want to immediately bake it, and I have all the ingredients on hand! That almost never happens for me. ;-)

Actually, I'm out of golden raisins, but I do have regular ones, and I might even have some dried cranberries in the pantry. Either way, I'm making me some scones tonight!

    Thanks for sharing! :-)

I am so excited to try your scone recipe; I just made lemon curd, that would be a yummy combo. My simple pleasures today was reading my Mary Jane Farms magazine and baking oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. :)

  9. Every morning before I go to work I sit down and have a pot of tea and knit for a few hours. It's the most relaxing part of the day. No scones but maybe a biscotti or two but it's just my time.

  21. Love reading your entries - and your blog is my simple pleasure...I baked your scones this morning..just the right mix of simple, cozy, and sweet.
I used craisins and couldn't wait 10 minutes to cool...warm right out of the oven. Just right for a morning at home!

  22. I like the idea of posting your simple pleasures. I find a great deal of happiness in things like this, and often find that even the simplest vase of flowers, or arranging a pretty vingette of thrifted things can make me feel "away" for awhile.

I love your rocking chair. I found an antique rocker at a thrift store awhile back, and I keep meaning to clean it up and bring it upstairs. You've inspired me to get that done. Thank you for the quiet inspiration of this lovely blog, Debbie.

    Take care.
