my 'new' bread box

A bad back is keeping me away from the computer {I suspect the scrubbing and painting of the living room and dining room may have something to do with it}, so I will just share some pictures of this old tag sale bread box.
It has been in sad shape in the basement for years--I finally decided that if I wasn't going to use it 'as is', I may as well paint it white...I think it will work out nicely :)
I love the little star and moon-shaped air holes on the sides...

It looks very charming - do you actually keep bread in it? Or something else?

  4. Sa-weet! I had one similar years ago, but it was too rusty to use for food. Must look for another this summer!

  5. Deb, I wanted to tell you I started my first petal dishcloth (from your post in October 2008 I believe) and am having such fun watching it go together. A few new knitting skills for me as I work through it, yet very satisfying to see it shape up, literally, on the needles. I'm so enjoying coming here for inspiration.

  6. P.S. Please forgive me for neglecting to say I so hope your back heals quickly. There's nothing quite so frustrating as having a sore back that keeps you from what you want to be about.

  9. You know the best thing for that back is bed rest.I hope you're doing that.We surely wouldn't know what to do without your post.

  10. I love it in white! I have a similar one with the original geranium print on it. I used it to keep my rarely-used roll of paper towels in...fits perfectly in the bottom section. I don't have to look at the roll, and if they're not in plain view, my family will remember to reach for the cloth towel instead.

Love your blog. Hope you're feeling better.

  13. It looks great in your kitchen. Take it easy with your back. Anything you don't get to do today will always be there when you're well again.

  17. The while paint did the trick. It is just wonderful.
I can sympatize about the back and am sorry yours is bothering you. The minute I do something the least bit strenuous, I spend the next day paying for it. Rest is good!

  25. I have that same bread box! It was my grandpa's, I inherited it after he died at the age of 104. Someone had painted it an awful coral pink, and did a terrible job of painting it! I stripped off the pink but have never repainted it, it's been in our kitchen ever since.
I hope you're feeling better soon.
