the busy season

The garden has been demanding a good
bit of attention of late.
These sunny faces are all volunteers,
transplanted from the potato patch...
If only I had some tall, strong volunteers
of the human sort to help with all
the weeding :)
Early morning is my favorite time to
weed the garden,
and I actually made it out there
several mornings last week.
Zucchini has been grated and frozen,
made into muffins & cakes,
sliced, fried, and sprinkled with grated romano,
and cubed & skewered on shish kabobs.
Cucumbers have been thrown into salads,
cut up and eaten plain,
and made into refrigerator pickles...

The blueberries have been on now for
a couple weeks.
They've been added to breakfast smoothies,
eaten on yogurt with granola,
thrown into pancakes,
made into pies,
and pounds of them have been
frozen for winter enjoyment.

Today I froze up lots of broccoli,
and tomorrow
I'm heading out to the blackberry patch.
The 'Busy Season' is here.

  1. Your garden is gorgeous! Ours is a little behind yours. Have you tried zucchini sliced fairly thin, sprinkled with feta and drizzled with honey and baked @ 350 for about 20-25 minutes until it starts to get golden? It is so good. Everyone who grows zuchiini needs just one more recipe for it right:>)

  6. Hi there Deb,
It is broccoli time here in South Australia too, just wondering how you freeze it, because I always end up with too much and it goes to waste?
    Many thanks, Suzanne.

  9. Love, love, love your blog!
Can you tell me how you freeze grated zucchini? My kiddos just devour zucchini bread and muffins, and I'd like to freeze some of the summer's bounty to use later in the year!

  10. I do hope to be as industrious one of these years. My dad always has a garden and I just adore fresh veggies and such. Yours looks amazing.

Oh! I'm having a "Simple Pleasures" blog party on Thursday, unless I screwed something up with Mr. Linky (ha). Hope you'll join me.

  11. I just love the idea that plants can be volunteers. That term is new to me this year and so descriptive. Lovely photos as usual.

  12. Do you just know how to freeze the zucchini and blueberries or do you recommend a source of info? I'll do a google search, but if you recommend any source in particular I'd like to know.

I'm entirely new at this. I tried freezing green beans and onion slices last year and they got freezer burn. I have a vacuum sealer now so I think that will with the freezer burn.

  13. I had sunflowers last year. One by one they were destroyed by squirrels climbing up them, presumably to get the seeds. Your harvest is looking good. Am jealous of your winter stash. xx

You have the most beautiful pictures on your blog. I found it looking for knitting ideas (I'm a baby knitter still) but I have kept coming back because of the photographs.

BTW, I've nominated you for a Versatile Blogger award over on my blog. :-)
    Love your posts!
