a free boot cuff pattern just for You

To thank you all for coming by throughout the year
with kind and encouraging comments,
here is a pattern I made for some knitted
boot cuffs.
I wore them today to church with a skirt, leggings,
and boots,
and they kept me quite cozy despite the cold weather.

homespun cabled boot cuffs

SIZE
To fit most, up to a calf circumference of 16 inches.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Circumference of boot cuff, unstretched:  approximately 12 inches
Length of boot cuff:  approximately 8 inches

MATERIALS
Bulky weight yarn; approximately 150 yards
US #11/8.0 mm straight needles
US #10/6.0 mm straight needles
cable needle
tapestry needle

GAUGE
12 sts /16 rows = 4 inches
PATTERN NOTES
Boot cuffs are a great looking, stylish addition to your wardrobe.  They knit up quickly, making them perfect for gift giving as well.  I have knit them with straight needles, but the pattern could be easily converted to circular knitting by omitting the selvedge stitch at the beginning and end of each row and adjusting the knit and purl stitches accordingly.

DIRECTIONS
With US 10 needles, loosely cast on 38 stitches.  Work in 2 x 2 rib as follows:
Rows 1 and 3 (WS):  Purl 1,*knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to last stitch, purl 1.
Rows 2 and 4 (RS):    Knit 1, *knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to last stitch, knit 1.

Switch to US 11 needles.  Begin cable pattern as follows:
Rows 1, 3, 5, and 7 (WS):  Purl 1, *knit 3, purl 9; repeat from * to last stitch, purl 1.
Rows 2 and 6 (RS):  Knit 1, *knit 9, purl 3; repeat from * to last stitch, knit 1.
Row 4 (RS): Knit 1, *slip next 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in front, knit 3, knit 3 from cable needle, knit 3, purl 3; repeat from * to last stitch, knit 1.
Row 8 (RS):  Knit 1, *knit 3, slip next 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in back, knit 3, knit 3 from cable needle, purl 3; repeat from * to last stitch, knit 1.
Repeat this 8 row cable pattern three times.

Switch to US 10 needles and work in 2 x 2 rib as follows:
Rows 1 and 3 (WS):  Purl 1,*knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to last stitch, purl 1.
Rows 2 and 4 (RS):    Knit 1, *knit 2, purl 2; repeat from * to last stitch, knit 1.

Bind off in pattern.  Sew seam using mattress stitch and weave in ends.

**This pattern is specifically for personal use only**--Thank you so much, Deb.

  10. Thank you, Deb! My older girls just came home with one pair they had bought in a new boutique. They were quite expensive little things! I'm thrilled to be able to make up four pairs for my girls. (and me, too) ;o)
I hope you and your family had a very Merry, blessed Christmas.

  22. Help! What am I doing wrong? I cast on 38 stitches as per the directions, but no matter what I do I don'tt end up with one purl stitch on either end. IF I start with one purl to begin, I end up with a single knit stitch at the other end. Somehow the count doesn't end up right. What am I doing wrong?

    1. Lori,
I’m sorry you’re having problems with the pattern—let’s hope I can help.

I’m hoping that if we add up the stitch count, it may help you find where the problem is.
      Row 1/3: Purl 1 = 1 st
      {Knit 2, purl 2 } x 9 = 36 sts
      Purl 1 = 1 st
      Total Sts = 38 sts

If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to let me know.
      Thanks,

      Deb

    2. I had the same problem... They 2x2 is 4 stitches. Therefore there isn't going to make a rib, I had to redo and cast of 40 stitches.

  23. Hello, thanks so much for the pattern it's lovely. I'm just 'graduating' to intermediate stage so to speak and just started cabling...what does WS and RS mean? I think I am missing something important...

    Thank you so much!

    1. Rose, WS stands for wrong side, meaning the back of your work; and RS stands for right side, the front side of your work. Best wishes with it, Deb

  24. Help! Please, can you help me figure out how to translate rows 4 and 8 into knitting in the round. I don't know where to start the cable. The problem is that I looked for my straight 10s and 11s for an hour and a half and can't find them, so have to use my long cables. Or, what is the name of the cable stitch you used? Maybe I can find a chart somewhere. I'm going to a gift exchange tomorrow and would like to knit this today. If it's too much trouble to do this, I understand and I'll try this some other time on straights. Thank you for the pattern.

    1. Hi Ludmilla,
I'm sorry you're having trouble with this. The name of the cable is a Braid Cable--an internet search should bring up some information and pictures, which will probably be more helpful than my attempts at explaining.
I am assuming you left off the 2 selvage stitches and cast on 36 sts; so row 4 will start with slip 3 sts to cable needle and row 8 will start with knit 3 sts.
Each cable panel is 12 sts and you will have 3 panels.
      Best wishes with it Ludmilla,

      Debbie

    2. Thank you. Yes, I've omitted the edge stitches and knit the first 3 rows. I'm going to put this down until after Christmas, when there will be time to think through the pattern. Merry Christmas and best wishes for the coming year.

  25. Oh, no. Did my comment disappear? I'm the one who asked about kntting in the round. Can't find my straight 10s and11s and would like a translation for rows 4 and 8, please, only if you're able to help me out. I definitely understand If you can/t or don't want to bother and I'll try the pattern when I have more time for sewing up than I do these days. Thank you for the pattern.

  27. Some friends recently asked me to make them some boot cuffs, as they didn't want to pay the high price for them in a boutique. Yours most closely matched the ones they wanted (4 pair!) and they turned out so lovely. Thank you for posting!

  30. Hi Deb-
When you repeat row 8 do you first repeat rows 5, 6 and 7? And why do you start with the row 4 cable but then switch to the row 8 cable? So far mine is not looking right.
    Thank you-
    Catherine

  32. Hi
I was wondering how to increase to make these fit a 21 inch calf
    Thanks

  33. Hi Marsha, seen your post and I think I can help. It is a 12 stitch pattern and if you were to increase your cast on to include another 12 stitches you should have a pretty good fit. Hope this helps.

  34. For getting the gauge do I use the larger needles? And is it referring to stockinette or garter stitch? Thanks! Jeanp

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Jean,
The gauge listed is for the cable panel (using the US 11 size needles) after blocking. Hope this is helpful,
      Deb
