a finished Mara

This is Mara, a free pattern from Madelinetosh.  Yarn is Knit Picks Wool of the Andes in Dove Heather.

I really enjoyed knitting this pattern and am so happy with the light silver color of the yarn.  I will probably wear this mostly as a bulky, scarf-like wrap in the cold blustery months ahead--it will be perfect and warm.

If there is one thing I would do differently, since I want to wear it more scarf-like, I suppose I would knit this a bit smaller.  The instructions seemed a bit confusing to me as far as the size--initially the pattern states that shawl measures 46 inches across in width...Later it states that shawl measures approximately 46 inches in width before pleated edging.  My finished Mara is about 56 inches across...More details on my Ravelry page.

  2. I really like the ruffled bottom which is rare for me and the color just says winter is coming...yikes...where did this bizzare weathered year go. I love this one and might have to give it a go as I feel winter is going to be snowy.

  9. Beautiful! One good thing, shawls are some what forgiving in sizes. I too would love this for just the reason you state. We heat with wood and it can become very warm but yet I need a snuggly something around my neck. This is perfect! Thanks for sharing!

  17. When you said you'd knit it a bit smaller, what would you do? Fewer rows? Fewer stitches? How much would you reduce it?

I'd like to knit one for a friend who would probably only wear it in a scarf-like fashion.

    It is so lovely!

  18. Did you pick up stitches for the edge after you knitted the shawl or is it done as you knit the shawl? Gorgeous color and I love the way it looked....
