the wonderful month of May

Spring...it has finally arrived, and all we want to do here is be outdoors!
I've started working on the garden and have all the raised beds ready for planting, and I've trimmed and mowed around them.  At the end of April I planted some seeds--lettuce, kale, radishes, and spinach--but so far only the radishes have come up.  The rhubarb is ready, and I tried a good recipe for strawberry rhubarb crisp bars and made a rhubarb blueberry crumble.
Daffodils and tulips are blooming, and the lilacs are almost in bloom.  The scenery around us is becoming greener as the leaves on the trees are beginning to unfurl.  I hung three birdhouse gourds in the pines.
Spring cleaning is still in progress, with most of the painting done and an office chair recovered {makeover pictures soon}.
I made it to the library book sale and, as always, found some good magazines and a few books.  My favorite is the 1939 copy of the Book of Trees, which has beautiful illustrations by Earl G. Wright.
Unfortunately the spring weather has also brought out the fox, who raided the chicken yard the morning of Mother's Day.  Two hens were lost, but we managed to scare the fox away and save a third hen {minus a few tail feathers}.  Otherwise, I had a wonderful Mother's Day and hope you all did too,

Deb

  6. Love the colour in your photos. I can hardly wait for some colour here. We had a heavy frost last night and I am beginning to think we may go directly to summer with not a sign of spring. Well we do have green grass at any rate.

    God bless.

  8. You've been busy! I saw the recipe for the rhubarb-strawberry crisp on Smitten Kitchen the other day - can't wait to make it. I'm so sorry about the loss of your chickens. :-(

  9. Great job on the lawn and raised beds. I can't garden down here as we have Bermuda grass and it comes up through everything. I have to use containers. We had Spring and warm temps and then rain and now it's cold. I too went to a library sale and got some great bargains. The rain has forced me me inside to clean which isn't a bad thing. I'm so sorry about your hens...especially on Mother's Day.
I bought rhubarb that was supposed to grow down here (AR) but it didn't. When I had my acreage in Iowa I had gobs of it and asparagus too and morels. Enjoy your rhubarb!

  10. Hi Deb! I just found your blog through flickr and I'm so glad I did! Beautiful!
I almost bought a rhubarb plant today when I was at the nursery, but I couldn't help but remember the summer I made rhubarb crisp and ate it all myself. Yikes!
    It's nice to meet you!
