Unbelievably warm and sunny weather here for this time of year! I took advantage of the weather this week to houseclean for the hens...out with the old and in with some new fresh fragrant wood shavings for the floor and nest boxes. Their heat lamp and heated waterer base are all ready for those soon-to-be frosty nights. And, they have a 'new' front door {a yard sale find} which is letting in lots of wonderful sunlight...
I'm hoping the added light will help to keep them laying better over the winter. They have finally just started leaving me some eggs...
...a little small yet, but most welcome!

I'm sorry to all who are waiting for replies from me; I am waaay behind on e-mails and will try to catch up as soon as possible. Thank you for all your kind comments and best wishes for my Dad, who is through 3 weeks of radiation therapy and soon to start chemo ~ thanks for all your prayers!!! Deb
Glad to hear from you. Will continue praying for your dad. Your hens have a darling house. They should lay lots of eggs just out of gratitude for the new door. Now they can roost and watch the world go by! ~Adrienne~
ReplyDeleteDeb-still praying for your Dad.

thanks again for the mug cozy I am so enjoying it with my coffee and tea.
Praying for your Dad - lifting him up in prayers today.
I will remember to pray for your Dad as I pray for my own.
ReplyDeleteThat little house is so sweet. I think your chickens will give you lots and lots of eggs in gratitude for such a nice place to live :-)
We have always kept a heat lamp in our chicken coop when the days get short. If they simply need light, we use a normal incandescent light bulb on a timer. If they need warmth, we add a heat lamp. This year I learned that baby chicks will pick on each other less if a red light is used rather than white. I wonder if that would hold true with the older hens. I can tell when the boys forget to get the light plugged in because it does make a difference on the number of eggs they lay! Our coop is empty this winter :(. We will need to get layers again in the spring.

Hi Deb,
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear that your Dad is going through treatment. We've experienced that with loved ones in our family a number of times, and I know that it is hard not to worry. My thoughts are with you, and I wish all the best for your dad.
Those eggs look so pretty in that blue bowl, and I love the little house ornament in the post down below. Thank you for sharing the link.
Congratulations on your magazine inclusion!
Thanks for the story about your chickens...pretty nice digs for the girls, LOL. Prayers going out for you and your dad tonight. We have a friend going through chemo right now, too. It's real hard.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jean, for that information. My husband just put an incandescent out there on a timer--so far the hens are laying fairly well. {We always use a red heat lamp when it gets cold-especially with the chicks, but even with the older birds.

I love the hen house I need one badly! I thought my 6 of my chicks born in July were hens. I have been looking every where, they are not using nest, well at least half are roosters!
ReplyDeleteYour eggs are so beautiful. I grew up with chickens and I hope to get some before long. I miss fresh eggs.
