a repurposed chicken crate

This chicken crate was picked up some
years ago at a barn sale--perfect
for carting our pleasingly plump birds
to the butcher,
...until this summer that is, when I decided I needed
it for a project.
And, the hens did not at all mind parting with it :)

Some sanding, lots of scrubbing, some stain,
a bit of homemade beeswax polish,
four casters {found at a yard sale for $5},
and a glass top,
and it was ready for the sunroom.

  18. Hi Deb, I'm new to your blog, spotted you on Patti Clark's blog! I make jewelry, here's my blog http://goinoffthebeadinpath.blogspot.com/
I see we have some things in common! I grew up with my father's 1,000 chickens! So I thought your chicken crate idea was especially innovative and amusing, too. Your garden is to envy! I'll come back when the latest show is over. Hope you'll visit me sometime! I'm adding you to my blog list :)

  23. I especially love the wheels! Also, the cookies (yesterday) turned out so delicious - I'm going to have to freeze the rest of the dough so that I don't finish it myself...

  26. I love this. I always love your ideas...

But. I used to have one of these chicken crates - from my grandparents- and for the likes of me I have no idea what ever happened to it. (we've moved several times since)

I'm certainly on the lookout, now, for another.

  27. This brings back memories! My cousins had one of these for a coffee table. They moved far away many, many years ago and I have only seen them once since.

  30. Since the first time I saw a chicken crate coffee table when I was a young bride many years ago I've admired them and wished I could find one. So glad you were able to 'borrow' yours from the chickens. It looks wonderful in your home!

  32. arrrgh! that looks so good...I wish you had this photo up when I tried to share my "vision" of a chicken crate coffee table last fall :))

needless to say, the chicken crate stayed in the junk store where I came across it...

  33. Wow Deb, the chicken crate/table looks amazing, I love how you can have the idea to change something into something else it's great

  34. I'm not usually a fan of glass-topped tables, but this is an architectural gem. I bet it's a conversation piece . . . very nice.

  35. Brilliant-I love this!!

  36. I must be a bad person because when I saw that coffee table, looking for all the world like a jail cell, I thought, "What a great place to put the cats."

In my defense, there's three of them; they're big, rambunctious Maine Coons; and one of them is a bully. (Maybe he's the only one who needs to go to jail.)

  37. Love it! I have a glass top for a coffee table needing a base. I'm still looking for something....:)

  38. Ah yes, absolutely wonderful! I just love it! It reminds me of the old railroad carts turned into coffee tables. I've been looking for one to make into a table and found one for $575! So needless to say, I'll still looking! This is awesome too! I think I like it even better because you can add things to the inside. Now I will add a chicken crate to my mental treasure list. Thanks for the wonderful idea, love it!!

    Chicken L-O-V-E!

Did you use a tempered glass top on your creatively clever coop table?  I'd like to do this to a wrought iron table with sandwiched vintage -local- ephemera.

  43. You know what, I'm not sure if it's tempered glass. I went to my local glass place to get a piece cut, and told them what I needed it for. It is fairly thick.
