making biscuits

Buttermilk biscuits, fresh out of the oven,
are 'my one weakness'
{I've been watching Larkrise to Candleford}.
This goes back to the days when my grandmother
made us Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits
and would let us kids crack the container against
the counter to make it pop open,
that being the most fun part of course.
~
The first biscuits I ever made from scratch were dry
and crumbly, but eventually I found a recipe
I love.
Using the food processor, they are ready
in no time...

...and are best hot from the oven.
Also, especially good with homemade blackberry jam
and whipped cream for morning tea.

Buttermilk Biscuits

2 cups flour
3 t. baking powder
2 t. sugar
1/2 t. cream  of tartar
1/4 t. baking soda
1/4 t. salt
1/2 c. butter, in pieces
3/4 c. buttermilk

Put dry ingredients in food processor.  Add butter and pulse til mixture forms coarse crumbs.  Add milk and pulse until dough just comes together--do not over process.  Pat dough out on floured surface {I like to use my pastry cloth} and cut out biscuits.  Bake 500 degrees F for 10 - 12 minutes.

The weather has gotten a bit chilly and we've seen the first few snowflakes, so we're enjoying the first woodstove fires of the season. Hope you had a warm and cozy weekend!

  8. From scratch should be a requirement for all baked goods. I've never met a product that beats homemade.

  9. Love, love, love homemade buttermilk biscuits! I may pretend it's chilly here and make a batch in the next day or two, to have with my tea. Am also going to look into Larkrise on YouTube...I could really use some fall-like weather now...

  14. I am going to print this out and try it because I have never made a good homemade biscuit. Your recipe has good ingredients and almost seems way too simple! 500 degrees? Is this right? I have never had my oven that high and I didn't even know it could go that high, hehe! I just wanted to make sure before I made my first batch. Thanks for sharing!!
