making a wool cable knit pillow cover in about an hour...

This project has been on my to do list for some time {there is a lot of inspiration online, as well as tutorials}...and shows that you don't necessarily need to spend hours knitting to make a cabled wool pillow cover.  If you have an old sweater, some buttons from the button jar, and a extra pillow on hand, you can have a pillow done in no time.
My old LLBean sweater was a bit too boxy and not too comfortable for me around the neck; but, it is wonderfully soft and has a beautiful cable pattern--perfect for a pillow cover.
The bottom ribbed edge became the cover opening.  I laid the sweater out with right sides together, measured my pillow, and cut out a square accordingly--up along one side, across the top just under the neckline, and back down the other side.  I stitched those three seams on my machine, turned it right side out, added the pillow, and closed the ribbed edge with some buttons.

A warm and cozy pillow for the winter months!

Hi Deb! When I saw your post title I thought "no way in an hour" until I read through. Since it's taken me a week to knit a wrap head wrap I knew cables weren't getting done that quick!lol I love all your knitting projects and have just gotten back into knitting and blogging although I've visited you quietly for a while now! Great idea for unused sweaters. Thanks for sharing it! Sincerely, Jeannette

  4. An easy peasy make over! I think it looks SOFT! now you get to enjoy your wool sweater all over again. Rather than letting it sit in the drawer or closet... feeding the moths. ;)

  5. How lovely! I did this also to some of my old sweaters and managed to get two pillows out of them, one for me and one for my daughter-in-law. I'm now on the look-out for a very, very large man's sweater to possibly make into a "throw blanket".

    1. Thanks Melissa! I'm actually knitting a cable throw with some chunky yarn.
I have seen pictures of blankets made from a patchwork of sweater squares...

  8. Love it. Have the perfect sweater for this, unfortunately my husband bought it for me so I'm not sure he would be happy with my creative efforts! Going to go through my closet for other possibilities.

There's always the thrift store--sometimes a nice wool sweater can be found there...

  11. This is a great quick project. I saw a whole armchair covered in recycled aran sweaters in a magazine recently so have been on the look out for second hand knits in charity shops.

  14. I have two sweaters that would be perfect for this project. Fall is time for texture. I also have my eye on an old blanket for recovering a chair.
