looking back at May...

The more hectic the days become or the more challenges and changes come our way, the more I appreciate the predictable rhythm of the seasons.

In the May garden, here, that always means lilacs, violets, bleeding hearts...

...flowering crab apple trees...

grape hyacinths, and allium...

There's lots going on here this last month as we've readied our little farm and house for sale and helped our daughter move into her first apartment.

We're officially empty nesters now, and it's left us feeling, well, quite...empty.  With both kids on their own and no more horses or donkey to fill the barn, we've decided to start our own down-sizing journey.  Deciding to sell our home after 20+ years of accumulating  a-lot-of-stuff means a lot of sorting and purging and packing...in addition to all the gardening and planting still going on.

Keeping busy is good...not much time to dwell on the empty nest.

  1. Hi Deb, how exciting, another of life's crossroads. I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding a buyer for your beautiful home. I hope you get the price you want and that you find another beautiful place to live.

  2. Moving on is always a little bittersweet, isn't it? I'm at the same point in my life--one has graduated college and is moving across the state to start her career, and my baby finished community college and will be headed out of town to finish his degree. Shhh...don't tell them, but I think I might tag along! Ha!

I have always loved your posts about your farm, so I will, in a sense, miss it too. I am excited to hear about your new adventures!

  4. Deb I am always stunned by the colour in your spring garden, we don't have quite the contrast due to our milder temperatures. How exciting that you are going to downsize, we are going to do similar in the future.

    1. Thanks Lesley-Anne! One thing is for sure, I will continue to garden. I shall miss all that we've planted here, which was a barren field when we arrived, but will enjoy starting some new gardens--ideas are already brewing...Deb

  7. Your garden is beautiful.

We have been empty nesters for awhile now, and keeping busy does help you over the first hump.

Congratulations on deciding to downsize, we still haven't gotten that far yet. We are however looking at moving somewhat closer to our children....but not too close.

    God bless.

    1. Thank you Jackie! We hope to stay near the kids, unless they decide to head in opposite directions--if so, a good excuse for some travel :)

  8. Hi Deb! I've not commented in ages, but still try to keep up with you. I have graduated to 13 chickens all thanks to your thoughtful post.
Our oldest two have moved out and have families of their own, and one has come back with her husband and had twin baby boys while here. :) (military discharge) They are moving in November. It's hard when they leave, for sure, but your kids might just move back. Isn't it funny how the older generation (at least in my town) stay in their huge homes and never downsize. We're hoping to downsize once everyone has moved, again, and the last girl is on her own.
You've done so many beautiful updates to your home through the years of blogging, and also to the outside. I know it will be hard to leave that behind, but I look forward to seeing how you make the next home yours. That is, if you care to share it with us. Blessings on your journey, friend!

  9. Oh Deb, We have just gone through the same journey you are about to begin. We sold our home last year, moved to the Blue Ridge MTs. and this year both kids graduated and moved out. It is a journey full of emotions. I have found very hard to describe it all in paragraph. Good luck and I look forward to many more posts from your new home and creations. I love your blog. Darby

  10. Well, I'd miss the kids and the donkeys, too. You'll have a new little spot to dwell and pretty up. I hate all the decisions that purging entails. I guess we should just play inspiring music while we sort and box.
The chicks will return and that is joyful!

  12. Hi Deb. Saddened by your announcement, yet heartened to know that you will find another home that will become - You. I have loved keeping tabs on your blog and have enjoyed all that you have shared. I think back to how I discovered your blog - purchasing yarn for a simple dishcloth, that was your pattern. Will you be staying in the same area? or thinking of moving entirely to a different area? I hope you are able to keep up with the blog as much as possible and wish you both all the best in your next adventure.

  13. Deb, it must be so hard to leave your beautiful home and garden, but I guess life always throws these kinds of moments at us and all we can try and do is turn them into a wonderful opportunity for something new. Looking forward to following your journey x

  14. Sorry I missed this post....I, too, am in the middle of a move. Downsizing and moving closer to family prompted the changes. It is not easy leaving behind so many things, places and people you love. Good Luck with your move...take a peek at my move....
