knitting basket liner

Lately I have had more than one knitting project going on at a time ~ tea cosy, fingerless gloves, and a sweater right now ~ and the living room has been scattered with balls of yarn, needles, etc. I thought it would be nice to have each project in its own basket which I could easily grab when needed, so I made a fabric liner for one basket this weekend using this barkcloth I bought at the flea market...
It's really simple, just a circle of fabric with a casing sewn around the outside for some elastic.

Now I can throw in everything I need and nothing slips through the cracks and the yarn doesn't snag. I love the barkcloth, though a lighter fabric might lay a bit better. I have a couple more baskets I'm going to try this with.

I just want to pass along a wonderful blog by Suzanne called Fruit of her hands; and if you love Tasha Tudor you will really enjoy reading Suzanne's post about her Pumpkin Moonshine day at Tasha's property. It motivated me to borrow Take Peace & Take Joy, when at the library this morning. Enjoy!

  1. Your basket looks really nice Debbie. I love barkcloth. I appreciate lined baskets and have a few, but I bought them that way. I'm always hoping to try and line a few myself, but haven't. It would be nice to line Christmas gift baskets wouldn't it?
Tasha Tudor inspires me greatly. I recently took a book about Christmas at her house off the shelf and set it next to my bedside to remind me to slow down and enjoy the season.
Hope you are having a nice week.

  2. That looks great. I've just done a post on the contents of my kniting basket. I found a few things that I thought were lost forever.

  4. I was enjoying Suzanne's post about Tasha Tudor as well. Now I need to find some of those books :)

This liner looks lovely and would be so easy to do. I need a basket to store my knitting projects and yarn now too. I've got balls on my dresser, my hope chest, in a laundry basket....they're taking over my house!

Thank you so much for the kind words about my blog and I am glad you enjoyed the post about Pumpkin Moonshine. It was indeed a special day. My friend and I have been there on a few occasions for St.Nicholas Tea and a garden tour and we both agreed there was something about this seasonal tradition Tasha created that spoke to our hearts more than anything. Maybe the setting, the good food and just taking life at such a slow pace for a couple of days:-) I can't wait to see that tea cozy knitted up! Love the colors! The fingerless gloves too---is it an available pattern by chance?

I'm really enjoying your blog. I'd be ever so appreciative if you would post the directions for the knitted tea cozies.
    Thanks!

  8. That's a really nice liner. I love the idea and I may even be able to do it if it's as easy as you made it sound. lol Thanks for the idea!

I love the fruit of her hands site. I already had it in faves but I don't remember how I got there.

The basket liner is great! Love the barkcloth! I never would have thought to just do a casing with elastic - genius! I am shamed because my knitting projects are travelling about my home each in their own gallon-size ziploc bag - tacky. Your knitting projects are being cared for in style!

Thanks for the link to Suzanne's blog. I'm off to check it out now.

  10. Debbie, I really like the practicality and beauty of your lined baskets. Great idea. I've always been a huge Tasha Tudor fan and I apprecite both her children's books and the books about her way of life. Thanks for pointing me to Suzanne's.
