rhubarb time

Today is sunny and warm - a nice break between the cooler rainy weather we've had. After hanging out laundry, doing a little mowing, and feeding the animals, I decided to pick the rhubarb and head inside to bake some pies...for me, a rhubarb pie really says SPRING!
My favorite recipe is for a rhubarb custard pie, and if you are looking for rhubarb recipes, there are many to be found here.
On a recent trip to a couple local Amish country stores to replenish baking supplies and spices...
...(as well as their excellent 3-year cheddar) I also found some really nice quilting cotton fabrics. Now that the pies are in the oven, I'm headed to the sewing machine to finish off a batch of clothespin bags...

  1. Oh my oh my just love the fabrics! Don't you just love Amish stores? Unfortunatley all we have here are Minnonite stores and none carry fabric, just the spices (which is worth it too) As for Rhubarb our family loves it.. I make a mean Rhubarb & Strawberry pie.. oh I love it, enjoy your day!

  2. My favorite is rhubarb custard too! I use my mom's recipe. Nothing taste better than the first rhubarb pie in the spring. SO GOOD!

    On another subject I rec'd my dishclothes in the mail today...thank you! Love the packaging too!

    I bought some rhubarb yesterday. Don't know what happened to my rhubarb plant! Maybe it's late making an appearance. Lovely fabrics! I wish we had an Amish store nearby!

  5. Rhubarb custard pie is THE BEST (with a cuppa hot, strong coffee and a tip of cream). My rhubarb is just now peeking up through the soil so it will be a little while before I can start pie baking. I think I can smell your pies from here! MMmmmm

  6. I never hear anyone mention rhubarb in Tennessee ... it was a BIG deal when we lived in Maine. I enjoy the glimpses of your kitchen in the background knowing all the ingenuity that went into that lovely redo. Enjoy your cheerful fabric and sewing! :o)

  7. I have never had rubarb! No one in my family ever grew it and we never bought it. I may have to buy some just to try your pie recipe. Lovely fabrics!

  8. I love rhubarb. I just found some growing in the grass by the woodpile. Still not big enough stalks to pick, soon I hope. Then I have to move the plant into the garden!
    We have the same rolling pin. My Dad bought me the set (with marble board) when I was about 13. I was the baker in the family even then.

  9. Beautiful pictures of something as simple as making a pie - you do have a knack for taking them. I LOVE rhubarb muffins and cake. It's that time of year, YAHOO. Love your new fabrics as well - very pretty.

    My rhubarb is just starting to peak through the ground. I can hardly wait to start picking. I figure about a week.

  23. Ruhbarb custard pie sounds So Good!! I grew up eating the Amish cheddar cheese. Whenever we would visit my aunt & uncle in PA we would make a stop at the Amish Country Store and purchase that delicious cheese (among other things). Haven't found another aged cheddar that tastes as good.
