Advent::from the Latin word for 'arrival' or 'coming', is a period of preparation for the birth of Jesus. Advent::begins four Sundays before Christmas and is the start of the Christmas season.
Advent began yesterday, yet today we were still without an Advent wreath, one of my favorite Christmas traditions. Many years the day seems to sneak up on me, and often I am cutting pine branches and crafting the wreath on the first Sunday of Advent...this year I didn't manage that--I hadn't even been able to find the purple and rose-colored candles that I love to use--so I sat this morning wondering what to do. Inspiration was found here...now this I could manage, and I wouldn't even have to go out in the wind/rain/snow that was coming down today. I rummaged through the house & basement and came up with some emergency candles, dried moss, clay, and a tag sale white floral container...
Here it is on the kitchen table, where we will enjoy it every day {thank you Benita!}. I never did finish the Christmas tablerunner I had planned, so some vintage linen will do for now...If you make one, what does your Advent 'wreath' look like?
Greetings Deb~ I am so very glad to hear that I wasn't the only one in the universe that First Advent snuck up on......truthfully, I don't even know where my wreath is! (I've promised to find it by Wednesday).
ReplyDeleteWe were happy just using the table candles last evening, and happy that *most* of us were present.
Having two small joyful voices to share in the singing this year made up for the missing wreath ;o)
I love your improv. This season snuck up on my too, but I'm catching up.
ReplyDeleteDebbie
its lovely
ReplyDeleteYou did a wonderful job. It looks so sweet. We didn't know about Advent when my children were growing up. I think it is a great thing to do with the family. I did put a Jesse Tree up yesterday and am hanging the ornaments one day at a time. I love it!
ReplyDeleteVery reminiscent of what our Swedish friends do to mark the season... they have the four candles in a line on a log or piece of wood. Our Advent wreath is made during the Sunday School hour at church each year.. the entire parish brings what greens they have, which is so much fun. This years version is on our blog.
ReplyDeleteI love your advent wreath! I'm going to need to do a little improvisation because I cannot find my advent wreath for the life of me!
ReplyDeleteDeb, nice little arrangement you did there. . . amazing what you can use the standard emergency candles for . . . and have it turn out so lovely. Good job!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Sher
It is beautiful Deb....peaceful and inspiring. cherry
ReplyDeleteIreally like your advent candles. I used to make one on a circle of pine greenery, just like in denmark but now we only use the one candle as a count down at dinner time.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this. We always have had one at church, but I never did it at home. I absolutely love your simple version. Even though my kids are grown, I may have to start this this year. Thanks for the great idea, you and Benita.
ReplyDeleteDeb, it looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteif you want to take a look at our "advent wreath"... it's not improvised, but the first time not made by myself: my 11 year old son did it at school! and i had to improvise with the spared green...

Oh I can do that! I don't have an advent wreath either....and I do have a pink container exactly like your white one. I have never ever know exactly what to do with it! I'm so excited! thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove it.. simple clean crisp white.
ReplyDeleteLovely advent candle centerpiece.
Mim
lovely :o)
ReplyDeleteI too love Benita - she rocks!
I will take a picture of mine today! Thanks for sharing yours
I absolutely adore this idea and I think I'll have to use it as well! We used to have a store-bought advent wreath, but quit the tradition some years ago. I'd like to start it again and you've provided just the right inspiration. Thanks.
ReplyDeletegreat idea & it's so simple & cute!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I have a wooden candle holder that holds 5 candles. Four in a circle and the fifth in the center(3 purple, 1 pink and a white). I put this in the center of a pine wreath. The whole thing sits next to the stable on top of our entertainment center. The stable starts with just the stable, cows and the shepards with sheep. Then we add more each week as we light the next candle. I think I will make something similar to yours for the dinner table. Thanks for the great idea. Karen
ReplyDeleteThis is so simple and lovely - what a great idea! Our wreath is covered in holly leaves and berries. I haven't put it out yet, or the calendar I made last year depicting the manger scene. I've got a huge list of things to get through before major knee surgery on the 17th!
ReplyDeleteI like the simplicity of this....very much.
ReplyDeleteHappy Advent, Deb.

I just love the simplicity of it. Have a Merry Christmas!

So pretty! And the photo sets it off nicely.
ReplyDeletewhat a great job and copy of the post you made reference to!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't made an Advent Wreath since my son's moved away. Seeing yours makes me want to start again.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I love your advent "wreath"! I am actually always tempted to do white candles...
ReplyDeleteThis year I made two -- one for the dining room and one for the kitchen.
I hope you get a chance to see them!
I was soo inspired by your wreath that I made one similar to it...check it out if you've got the time. :o)
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute...what a wonderful idea.
ReplyDeleteThat's so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI was at Barnes and Noble tonight and picked up a copy of "the Arful blogger". I ran across your site. SO wonderful! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteDeb, that is so pretty and simple. I love it!
ReplyDeleteSince we have two young children, our Advent calendar is a red/green link chain that my daughter made in kindergarten. We remove one link a day, until we get to the star at the top.
Deb,
ReplyDeleteI have an award for you - please stop by my blog and get it. You are such an inspiration to me - I love reading your blog and seeing the creativity that always seems to flow from you.
Blessings to you,
Kymber
My problem is execution! I plan, plan, plan and then don't execute! But then I find that those things I do "in a pinch" (because I have not executed those glorius plans!) work just great--like your candles! I love them!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your blog!
ReplyDeleteHi Deb--first visit to your blog and I appreciate the simple, "homespun" quality of your posts and your art work. I too found your blog though the latest issue of Artful Blogger. Coincidentally ,I have been reading The Huffington Post Complete Guide to Blogging this week as well. It's like the best of both worlds. The Huffington Post gives you nuts and bolts and the bloggers featured in Artful Blogging shows you how to make your blog more creative and artistic. Great blogs have both--good writing and beautiful visuals.
ReplyDeleteI'll be back to see what your next project will be. This weekend I'm making evergreen wreaths. Wish me luck. Hopefully they'll be worth a photo on my blog.
I'm finally sitting down with my copy of Artful Blogging tonight...in search of kindred spirits and a little inspiration. Found it! Hope to stop by often. I have to try those pumpkin cookies. Check out my blog if you get a chance...I'm looking for some blogging buddies!
ReplyDeleteLove this take on the advent wreath. I'm mentally stashing this idea for next year!
ReplyDelete(Great pics on your blog, by the way.)
