It was back in August that I started the 'Owls' sweater.
Halfway through the body I set it aside, but with fall now here I recently picked it up again.

And, yesterday was the big day it would be finished! Before binding off the neckline, I tried it on one more time.
Ignoring the circular needles sticking out the neckline, the unsewn armpits, and some trailing bits of yarn, I was really happy with the fit...
...then I checked out the back...
...and I have to tell you, my back is not grossly mishappen as it would appear. There is just too much sweater between the shoulders--one too many owls it would seem...big disappointment, as I realized it will have to be ripped out and refigured.
I knew some knitters had had this problem, and I had tried the sweater on before adding the arms and it seemed all was well...
As soon as I can bear it, a-frogging I will be.
Ah the joys of knitting. Your very patient I would be in tears over something like that. But it will be darling when you finish it.

ReplyDeleteWait! Don't frog quite yet! I had that problem too, but when I blocked it, it all but went away. Now there's a tiny bulge that is only noticeable to me. Maybe give blocking a shot before ripping all that hard work!
ReplyDeleteMargarite, I would love to not have to undo all those cable owls! But there is a lot of extra sweater there in the back...can I block it, and then still frog if need be?

Oh No!!!! I hate frogging and I know it would take me a long time to frog that one after all that work.

Oof! I would cry. Your sweater is beautiful- I love that pattern. Maybe if you hunch over? :) I've been in the same spot before and had to put it away for awhile. You have a great attitude.
ReplyDeleteOh my Gosh, How disappointing! I would be in tears myself. I think I would also be so mad that I would be determined to make it right. It really looks beautiful from the front! It will be fantastic when fixed. Really, it will!

ReplyDeleteYour knitting is lovely! I'd love to be able to do this, but I KNOW I would run into something like this every time and I'm not a very patient person when it comes to re-doing something. I do hope you stick with it though... It would be worth the effort!

ReplyDeleteI myself was going to say I would try the blocking, and if didn't work, I'd just wear a blazer with it. :) I hate going backward and redoing.

I would really try blocking it before frogging...it shouldn't affect the frogging and you don't have anything to lose by trying except perhaps a little time and effort. Weigh that against the potential of A LOT of time and effort.... Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard the term "frogging". I think if it was me, that sweater would be delegated to the back of my closet...another "one day when I feel like it" projects for the day that doesn't ever come!

I winced when I first read the frogging thing..ewwww.
It fits you so beautifully by way of the front view! Rats. I think you should be able to steam press it carefully with a pressing cloth. You would still be able to frog it if the bulk didn't cooperate with the plan.

ReplyDeletei think you can block and then rip out if need be. i've read over and over (yarn harlot) about washing and blocking swatches for correct gauge because yarns behave differently after that process .... good luck!

ReplyDeleteThe same thing happened when I knitted it, although I actually blamed my weird back, so it is reassuring to see it also won't fit some other people that well. ;-) I couldn't bear to frog the owls, so I cut the thread above the de-/increase, undid that row and caught the stitches on a needle and then knitted the bottom part again downwards, without the waist reduction. It's probably not that elegant than the original that way, but much more flattering on me. ;-) (Here's a picture)

ReplyDeleteDon't you just hate it? Another re-do, rip out, re-knit.... The same thing happened to me 2 nights ago. I have been working on a toddler's jacket, followed the pattern, and the collar does not fit. This is where improbisational skills are a plus. Good luck with your sweater, its still beautiful.
