making pizza...

Remember the dried tomatoes in olive oil that I made in October...well I had forgotten all about them tucked in the back of the fridge, until the other day when I went to make some pizza. We have a new favorite recipe here for pan pizza by Genie Dickerson, which I found in Mother Earth News Oct/Nov 08 issue. {Same magazine our now-favorite crusty bread recipe came from.} I make several of these pizzas at a time, as I have found out it's possible for a teenage boy to eat a whole pizza in one sitting. This one below...

...had sauce, cheese, peppers & mushrooms on one side; dried tomatoes, {no sauce, just cheese} garlic, and basil on the other. I did use my own sauce recipe, rather than Genie's. Anyway, the dried tomatoes came out great, and I will be sure to make more next summer. You can find the pan pizza recipe here.
For dessert...
...a delicious Marks & Spencer mince pie, a whole box of which I received from Claire in England. I'm not sure if this is proper, but I ate my warm pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream--it was wonderful!!
Thankfully Claire also sent me the recipe.

  1. Making homemade pizza is a weekly event in our home this winter. This year I discovered white pizza with apples carmelized onions and bacon we used cheddar one time and mozzarella a second time. I love this.I'll have to go back in your blog.I missed the sundried tomato lesson. I just got my seed catalogues and I planning on Romas for drying.

  2. I love making homemade basil and garlic pizza crust and then cooking it on the grill. My son and his wife wanted us to make them in Alaska while we were visiting but we ran out of time. It's fun to do when you have company. Always impresses them. We grew Romas this last summer but ate all of them. Might have to rethink our plant could this year and have more so I can make some dried tomatoes.

  4. My word your pizza looks delicious! That's one thing I've never been able to do well at home and need to try again. Cooking at home gives you control over exactly what you are eating and I like that.

you can make mince pies - and mincemeat - very easily. but for now, if you've any mince pies, next time, try lifting the lid very carefully on one, and sliding a little brandy or rum butter underneath the lid. (when the pie is warm, of course). it'll melt all over the mincemeat and give a wonderful flavour to it... can't be beaten!

  12. Pizza is one of my favorite meals...I try to make one every week or two. Last weeks crust was made using my dough from my new Christmas cookbook, "Artisan bread in 5 minutes a day", and was delicious. We used a bit of homemade sauce, slices of fresh mozzarella, then topped it with fresh slices of roma tomato, thinly sliced yellow onion, and chopped green olives. I'm makin' myself hungry! I think we'll be having pizza again this weekend!
    Thanks Deb.

  14. Ooh! That's a good find! We've been using the peppers in oil that I made this summer for pizza and it's so good. Plus, every time I use those peppers I'm quite proud of myself for growing and storing them.

  15. Homemade pizza is one of our family's favorites too. Our favorite is probably pesto and shrimp pizza, but we also have an old barbeque chicken pizza recipe that everyone just loves.

Sun dried tomatoes are a particular favorite of mine-will have to check your entry about making those.

  17. The pizza looks delish! And those dried tomatoes...look tasty...I'm sure they were scrumptous on the pizza.

Now as far as being proper...with putting ice cream on your mince pie...I don't think you can "BE" improper when it comes to ice cream...or dessert...just sayin! All's fair when it comes to what you want in AND on your desserts! So I think you are more than safe...and PROPER! LOL!

    Blessings...

  19. Good morning Deb,

Great looking pizza and thanks for the Mother Earth link.

Also I wanted to say many many thanks for posting the pic of Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Farm Journalist" book in your sidebar. I had no idea this and other later works of hers were available until I saw your picture.

They arrived here on Santa's sleigh.

    Cheers,

  22. Oh, it all looks delicious! And the pizza must be so tasty with the dried tomatoes that you made, not to mention the other ingredients (I can understand why you would need to make several at a time!).

I have never made homemade pizza because my son is a "Pizza Chef" and he makes the best I've ever tasted. Now about those tomatoes, those I will definitely make this year. They look delish. Thanks for all the great ideas you give us. Wish you were a quilter. LOL Know you would be full of quilting ideas.

I thought that looked like an M&S mince pie and it was - the best bought mince pies you can get :) It is totally okay to eat them warm with ice-cream, or sometimes we warm them and have them with whipped cream. I think they taste better warm. I am a transplant from England, living for 5 years now on the West Coast, and it doesn't feel like Christmas without mince pies :)

    You can't beat homemade pizza.

I even built a pizza oven on the land so we can have wood fired, authentic pizzas.

Quite amazing. Once the oven is hot it takes les thana minute for a perfect pizza.
