March days

After a couple weeks of the most beautiful
warm weather, we have been firmly jolted back to
reality.  The woodstove is again keeping us
cozy as it was only 25 degrees out when we woke this
morning.  We're back to the 'real March',
but thankful for the short time we had to
get outside and get a jump on yard work
and gardening.
The rhubarb quickly put on a few inches
thanks to the warm sunshine...

I was able to get the raised beds weeded--one
has strawberries, and the front one has
blackberries, along with some daffodils.
I placed an order for some Heritage raspberries
and Mara des Bois strawberries for the other two
beds...

Over the chilly weekend, I baked some hot cross buns
to have with our tea...

...brought some hyacinths in so I can
enjoy their scent when doing dishes...

...and picked up my knitting again in hopes
of finishing the garter yoke cardi--only
a couple inches of the sleeve left to go.
I thought about searching for some new buttons
for it online, but decided to 'use-what-I-have'.
Luckily I was able to come up with 9 matching
mother of pearl buttons...

A few more March days, and I think I'll have
it done.

I've enjoyed the weather too before the cold came back. I would love to know how you make a nice pot of tea. My efforts at tea-making sadly always turns out to be a watered down version of tea. I love strong robust cups of tea but it hasn't been working out for me with loose leaf tea. Any tips?

    1. Grace, I love a strong cup of tea also. Most days I make a small pot, which gives me about 2-1/2 small tea cups of tea. I use a mesh tea ball {infuser?} which holds about 2 teaspoons of teaspoons of loose tea--maybe a bit more. Though most advice I've read for steeping tea suggests about 3 - 5 minutes, I find that with the mesh tea ball I need to leave it in longer to get the stronger tea I like. I usually steep mine somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes--I'm not always consistant, so some pots of tea I make are much better than others! Hope this helps :) ....Deb

    2. Grace...also, I use PG Tips brand loose tea, which is a British tea. I find it is more robust than American brands; I buy it online from englishteastore.com

  4. Oh, your photos are lovely! Your raised beds are making me jealous and your kitchen is so warm and cozy! We are having off and on Spring weather here in WA State, too. Seems every time the sun is out, I have other committments and haven't been able to get out. So nice that you have a head start! So happy we get to look forward to more, even it it is in fits and starts! Enjoy your tea! xx

  5. So rhubarb won't freeze if it dips to 25 degrees?

    1. Vicki, I can't see where the cold temps have affected the rhubarb at all--it's ver hardy! ...Deb

  7. I think we just got the cold weather down here from you. It was almost summerlike last week, and last night it dipped to 37 here. Makes it feel really cold at 58 degrees after last week! LOL! Your raised beds look so nice and neat, and can't wait to hopefully see the cardi.

  8. You're seeing far more spring than we are so far. But it's coming. I brought out my old sweater, Sven, as my husband calls it. I'm just chilly.

  9. Deb,

I can't tell you how much I enjoy reading your blog...it makes me happy to stop by and reading what your day has been like. Your cardi is going to be beautiful...

It has been very cold again here in New Hampshire...and between the warm days and these cold days - my allergies have triggered some asthma concerns...but, I am blessed that I have friends who are looking out for me...
