This poor old school desk has sat on our
back porch for years, and was really
looking shabby and seriously neglected.
Any former finish was gone,
so this past weekend I decided to get
out some paint and see what I could do.
This piece was handed down to us from
Mike's family and his parents, aunts/uncles,
siblings, and nephews names were all
carved into the top...

After a good sanding down and cleaning,
I applied two coats of Behr's french gray blue
in eggshell.
The next day, I distressed it with the
sander, then waxed it with a brownish wax
to age it.
And, the brownish wax filled in the
carvings so they are still visible...

Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that the carvings remained. It looks lovely and would have been so sad to erase those memories. Well done.
ReplyDeleteAs I've said before...Just when I think I've seen my favorite post of yours I find another one. You inspire me more than you know.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great update!
ReplyDeleteHow great that the carvings are still there and highlighted!!
ReplyDeleteHow neat - I think it turned out great! That's "history" for you to be able to keep those carvings. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I love it! I'm glad all those initials from years gone by are still there...
ReplyDeleteOld school desks are so neat. Maybe the next time we see one I'll have to buy it. How awesome to have the carvings on it. Great family history. :)
ReplyDeleteI love it and the carvings are beyond sweet!

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, your comments have turned up as Blogger comments! YAY! Once they did this and then reverted back to Disqus. :(
ReplyDeleteThe main advantage, I think, w/ Blogger is that a reader can click on someone's name and instantly read their blog. With Disqus, this doesn't happen.
Love your makeover desk. So rustic yet clean & new. Beautiful.
Love it!!!
ReplyDeleteOver the weekend, when I hit "Comments", it showed up using Blogger, and I posted a comment on this post. Did it ever reach you? Not sure how that happened. Anyway, just wanted to say what a great restoring job you did on the desk. A lovely find that has just gotten lovelier with your personal touches.
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome piece! I love how all their names are engraved on the desk! So cool that the paint job really accentuates the names now.
