This past week has been one of our
stay-at-home work/play vacations.
It started last weekend with a trip
to farm country to deliver our 12 meat birds
to be butchered.
The scenery is always a treat,
and it was a gorgeous day...
{well, depending upon whom you asked.}
{well, depending upon whom you asked.}
My new laying hens arrived recently
and have taken up residence in the vacated barn
stall...
The Silkie bantams are loving their free-ranging
lifestyle and have done no damage to the garden!
They are extremely well mannered, calm and
gentle--not sure if it's because they are bantams
or if it's just the breed.
We can even pick them up without
a fuss.

Nice countryside Deb, the little red buildings say "rural America" to me, though I don't know if they are typical or not of course.
ReplyDeleteThe bantams are too cute!
Those bantams are gorgeous! So pretty. Your photos look so peaceful and calm.
ReplyDeleteThose chickens are so pretty! I've never gotten that breed. My husband likes reliable Rhode Island Reds, but I may convince him next spring!
ReplyDeleteI love silkies! Unfortunately they don't lay well and go broody all the time... so we've resorted to keeping bantams (cross bred) - we do have a Pekin and she's gorgeous too. I love visiting your blog - it's so peaceful and homey.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lilian, I'm glad you stopped by!

If I ever get my wish to have hens in the garden I've just got to have a Silkie or two - just for their looks!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful hens! We've had free-roaming chickens before, but they were hard on the plants and flowers! Perhaps we'll have to try this breed! Thanks for sharing your great photos!!!
ReplyDeleteWe just moved "further into the country" and have a log home with an old barn in the back that has an attached chicken coop and run. We are looking into getting chickens for eggs and I have enjoyed reading about yours in the past. I know NOTHING about raising them, but have been doing lots of research lately. Any advice?
ReplyDeleteI love reading about your country living! You are a lady of many talens - your fancy work is grand!
ReplyDeleteYour chickens are so beautiful. We raised some of those fluffy beauties years ago- so precious!
ReplyDeleteI love that last pictures. The way they look somehow always makes me lough.
ReplyDeleteKaren, I tried to answer this in a post--you can read it here: http://homespunliving.blogspot.com/2011/07/raising-chickens.html
ReplyDeleteThanks!
They can be very entertaining!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting!

ReplyDeleteThey're like jewelry for the garden :)
